Selection and Interview Process at Microsoft
The interview process at Microsoft typically comprises three to four rounds, starting with a Phone screening or aptitude assessment, then technical round, proceeding to a HR interview for applicable roles.
1. Resume Screening: Candidates apply through the Microsoft Careers portal, campus recruitment, or via employee referral. Recruiters evaluate resumes for strong computer science fundamentals, relevant projects, prior internship experience, and demonstrated problem-solving skills.
2. Online Assessment: Shortlisted candidates are typically invited to complete an online coding assessment, hosted on platforms such as Codility, HackerRank, or similar. Focus on data structures, algorithms, and logical problem solving
3.Technical Interview: This is followed by coding questions, generally one to three per round, often LeetCode-style problems that require candidates to write and explain their solutions in real time. Interviewers may ask follow-up questions to assess time and space complexity, edge cases, or alternative approaches. The questions commonly cover arrays, strings, linked lists, trees, graphs, and dynamic programming, with occasional discussion of system fundamentals, depending on the role and interview scope.
4. Behavioral Interview: In this stage, interviewers focus on behavioral questions such as describing a challenge you overcame, explaining why you want to work at Microsoft, or discussing experiences involving teamwork, conflict resolution, or leadership. Candidates are encouraged to structure their responses using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to clearly communicate their experiences.
