Selection and Interview Process at Microsoft
The interview process at Microsoft typically comprises three to four rounds, starting with a application screening round, online assessment, Managerial or Technical Round proceeding to a HR interview for applicable roles.
1. Application and Screening: You submit your application through campus recruitment, the Microsoft Careers portal, or via a referral. Recruiters review your resume to assess relevant coursework, personal or academic projects, and foundational computer science knowledge.
2. Initial Phone/ Recruiter Screening: There is typically a phone or video conversation with a recruiter, where they explore your background, motivation for interning at Red Hat, and overall behavioral fit.
3. Online Assessment: Most candidates begin with an online coding test, typically consisting of 2–3 problems. These questions generally focus on data structures and algorithms, covering topics such as arrays, graphs, trees, and dynamic programming.
4. Technical Interview Rounds: Typically, one interview round is purely technical, where you solve coding problems live and discuss your approach to data structures and algorithms. Another round, or part of a round, may combine technical questions with behavioral discussion.
5. Behavioral Interview: Microsoft uses behavioral questions to evaluate a candidate’s growth mindset and alignment with company culture. Candidates are encouraged to answer using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). You may be asked about your previous projects, challenges you encountered, how you solved problems, and how you work effectively in a team.
6. Offer/ Decision: Once all interview rounds are complete, the interviewers submit their feedback, which the HR team or hiring manager reviews to make a final decision. If you are selected, you receive an internship offer, typically within a few days to a few weeks according to candidate experiences.
