Selection and Interview Process at Cisco
The interview process at Cisco typically comprises three to four rounds, starting with a Phone screening or aptitude assessment, then technical round, proceeding to a HR interview for applicable roles.
1. Online Application: The process begins by submitting your application through Cisco’s careers portal or via a campus recruitment program. Recruiters review your resume, focusing on networking knowledge, technical projects, certifications (such as CCNA), internships, and problem-solving experience.
2. Online Assessment (if applicable): Many candidates are asked to complete an online assessment before interviews. The assessment may include aptitude questions, logical reasoning, basic programming (for some roles), networking fundamentals, operating systems, Linux basics, and multiple-choice questions related to computer networks and troubleshooting.
3. Technical Interview: The first technical interview focuses on core networking concepts and troubleshooting skills. Interviewers commonly ask questions about the TCP/IP model, OSI model, routing and switching, VLANs, subnetting, IPv4 and IPv6, DNS, DHCP, NAT, VPNs, wireless networking, and protocols such as OSPF, BGP, STP, and EtherChannel. Candidates are often presented with real-world networking scenarios where they must explain how they would diagnose and resolve connectivity issues. Linux commands, basic scripting, and customer support scenarios may also be discussed.
4. Managerial or Hiring Manager Interview: This round evaluates your communication skills, customer-facing ability, teamwork, and analytical thinking. The interviewer may discuss your projects, internships, challenging technical problems you’ve solved, and how you approach troubleshooting under pressure. Since Technical Consulting Engineers regularly interact with customers, you may also be asked how you would explain complex technical issues to non-technical users or handle difficult customer situations.
5. HR Interview: The final HR round typically covers your motivation for joining Cisco, career goals, strengths and weaknesses, work preferences, relocation and shift flexibility, salary expectations (for experienced candidates), and notice period. The recruiter also explains the role, company culture, benefits, and the next steps in the hiring process.
