Selection and Interview Process at IBM
The interview process at IBM typically comprises three to four rounds, starting with a Phone screening or aptitude assessment, then technical round, proceeding to a HR interview for applicable roles.
1. Online Coding Assessment: The first stage generally tests basic programming and problem-solving. Recent drives have used HackerRank-style assessments, with questions commonly covering arrays, strings, linked lists, stacks, queues, searching/sorting, and basic logic. Coding difficulty is generally around easy to medium.
2. Cognitive Ability Assessment: Some IBM fresher drives include a game-based cognitive assessment that evaluates logical reasoning, numerical ability, pattern recognition, memory, and problem-solving speed. This stage is not present in every hiring drive.
3. English Language Assessment: Candidates may then complete an English assessment covering grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, reading/listening comprehension, and spoken communication. The exact format and duration can differ between drives.
4. Group Discussion: For some campus drives, IBM conducts a Group Discussion (GD). Topics are generally based on technology, workplace issues, or general subjects. Candidates are evaluated on communication, clarity of thought, confidence, listening, and teamwork. This stage may not appear in off-campus hiring.
5. Technical Interview: The technical discussion usually focuses on your resume, academic projects, programming fundamentals, OOP, DBMS/SQL, and basic DSA. Depending on the drive, questions can also cover Java/Python/C++, operating systems, networking, or basic coding. Recent candidate reports specifically mention project discussions, OOP, SQL, and easy coding questions.
